Job Description

Job Objectives:

To provide a stable, reliable and efficient supply of energy for the Qatalum smelting process that is aligned to the overall Qatalum standards, through the well managed use of the installed assets, processes and staff. Maintain cohesion and joint purpose across the site, together with other members of Qatalum Management Team.
 
Job Description:
  • Ensure that all business processes specific to the Power Group are identified, documented and then carried out in a controlled and consistent manner, including those that cater for forecasting, measurement and verification of any transactions within 3rd party agreements.
  • Determine Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that reflect overall objectives for the group and supporting targets and indices derived from commercial and technical interests of constraints.
  • Ensure processes and mechanisms are in place to manage actions that relate to the accomplishment of the targets and to track related indices.
  • Ensure that staff are aware of, and trained where necessary on Qatalum plant-wide business processes, and that they adhere to these processes.

  • Promote awareness and a culture of continuous improvement with respect to Health, Safety and Environment, and consider and actively develop improvement potential for all processes.
  • Encourage staff to provide input where any improvement potential is noted, whether technical in nature or related to business processes.
  • Ensure the development of nationals and to take on adequate positions should be given special attention.
  • Support Qatalum Management team as a whole in determining and implementing improvements or in making changes.
  • Keep Qatalum Management team and Power Group staff regularly updated on issues which have or might have an influence on activities within other areas, and information that might be of common interest.
  • Establish and maintain good relations with all internal and external parties.
  • Actively develop and maintain Succession plans for the department. Also play an active role as a mentor.
  • Determine and submit an annual business plan including budget in accordance with the established corporate framework.
  • Put in place and manage a budgetary control process that ensures adherence to the established budget or justification of necessary departures from it, developing a cost consciousness within Power Group team.
  • Recruit and retain the necessary caliber of staff, ensuring they are trained and developed, and periodically assess their ability and potential.
  • Ensure that the group is correctly staffed and operationally prepared for the expected demands of operating and maintaining the facilities both at steady state and under crisis situations.
  • Establish and maintain an organizational structure that allows the effective and efficient management and control of all activities carried out within the group and is aligned to Power Group’s overall objectives and determine the division of responsibilities within this organization ensuring that Job Descriptions are available for all positions.
  • Establish a process of risk assessment and review that addresses all aspects of the management of the assets and personnel within the group, and ensure that necessary risk mitigation measures are identified and acted upon where feasible.
  • Ensure that Power Plant Rectiformers and HV Distribution network is operated and maintained in a manner that maintains plant integrity and reliability, maximizes asset lifetime and efficiency, and optimizes overall (direct and indirect) cost.
  • Ensure that the competency of staff, Operating Procedures and maintenance support associated with management of any foreseeable operational crisis are kept in focus and are to a standard that maximizes the organizational capability to normalize the situation.
  • Ensure staff competencies are regularly assessed and any identified actions are assessed and where justified, are acted upon.
  • Liaison with Project Organization to ensure delivery of power related assets in best condition for operation and delivery of reliable power to the Aluminium plant.
  • Establish 3rd party agreements that are aligned to and protect the interests of Qatalum, covering the supply of gas, electrical power and other services, and ensure that full commercial advantage is obtained from these agreements by close control of associated processes and periodic review of potential.
  • Initiate and conclude agreements or working arrangements with other parties who share common interests and potential advantage from such relationships, such as owners of similar gas turbines or other equipment.
  • Ensure all support service requirements are identified, specified and obtained to effectively and efficiently support the operations and maintenance activities of the group.

Minimum Qualifications Required
  • Master’s Degree in relevant Engineering discipline
Minimum Experience Required
  • 12-15 years in operation and/or maintenance of power plants
  • 5 years in the management team of a combined cycle power plant
  • International experience
Job Specific Skills
  • Substantial knowledge of engineering practices, functions and processes involved in operation and maintenance of Power Plant
  • In depth knowledge of Combined Cycle Power Plant operation and maintenance
  • Good management skills combining task and people orientation with the ability to reach satisfactorily negotiated solutions
  • Financially astute with a sound understanding of contractual frameworks
  • Knowledge of typical legislation associated with Power Plant operation and maintenance
